Lakewood Police shot a man Sunday night after he fired on officers, police said.
The incident began at about 9:49 p.m., when two police officers in a patrol car got into a pursuit of a suspected stolen car at Gravelly Lake Drive and Interstate 5, said Lt. Chris Lawler, a police spokesman, in a news release.
The officers chased the suspect northbound on I-5 until the suspect car exited at Portland Avenue. After police forced the car to a stop, the driver fired at officers, according to Lawler. The officers fired back, hitting the man.
After initially reporting the suspect was killed at the scene, Lawler said the man was taken by ambulance Sunday night to an area hospital. His condition was not known.
The officers were not hurt. They have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation of the shooting — a standard procedure in such incidents.
