Thousands gather to mourn slain Nassau County cop Arthur Lopez

The officer was shot by an ex-con during a traffic stop after a hit-and-run Tuesday. This is the second funeral in six days for Nassau police.

Thousands of mourners gathered Saturday for an emotional farewell to Officer Arthur Lopez, even as they struggled to accept the hero cop’s death by a maniac’s bullet.

“Artie, you left us way too soon,” said his teary boss, Lt. Adam Scheiner, at a funeral filled with devastated family, friends and fellow officers. “Way too soon.”

The 29-year-old cop was gunned down Tuesday morning by an ex-con during a traffic stop after a hit-and-run accident near the Long Island/Queens border.

“Arthur got out of his vehicle to see what was going on and suddenly he was gone from us,” Nassau County Police Commissioner Thomas Dale said inside St. Christopher’s Church.

“He dedicated his life to the people of Nassau County,” Dale continued. “May God bless our special hero Arthur Lopez.”
