Attorneys defending the city of Chicago in a federal lawsuit stemming from the infamous 2007 beating of a female bartender by an off-duty police officer today rested their case, setting the scene for closing arguments on Tuesday.
Witnesses called by the city challenged key assertions by lawyers for the bartender, Karolina Obrycka, that higher-ranking officers obtained misdemeanor charges in a bid to minimize Abbate’s conduct and that the city has an abysmal record of disciplining officers for excessive force.
