A Peoria man who prosecutors say is a high-ranking enforcer for a street gang was ordered held without bail today after being charged with murder in a 2009 slaying on the South Side.
Jesus Zuniga, 28, is charged with first-degree murder in the Aug. 17, 2009 killing of Carlton Ewing, 24, who was shot as he rode with others in a car on the 9800 block of South Ewing Avenue, police said. In a bond hearing midday today, Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. denied bail for Zuniga, whom he called a “danger to society.”
Zuniga, of Peoria, was a high-ranking “enforcer” for the Latin Kings street gang, according to Assistant State’s Attorney Jamie Dickler.
On Aug. 17, 2009, Zuniga had ordered what is called a “Hood Day,” when members of the Latin Kings “patrol the area looking for enemies to shoot,” Dickler said. Zuniga’s two already charged co-defendants were underlings in the gang and Zuniga gave one of them a handgun and ordered them to be on the lookout for rivals.
