A basketball coach at a South Side high school was charged Thursday with sexually assaulting an underage female student while giving her a ride home earlier this month.

Kevin Jones, 33, a varsity boys basketball coach at Epic Academy Charter High School in the 8200 block of South Houston Avenue, was charged with two counts of criminal sexual assault and one count of attempted criminal sexual assault, the Cook County state's attorney's office said.

Jones was driving the 17-year-old girl and her friend home from school Jan. 17 when he told the friend to get out of the car in the 8500 block of South Green Bay Avenue, according to Chicago police. When the friend returned, she saw Jones and the teen engaged in a sexual act in the car, one source said.

The friend told her brother what happened and he called a school official, a law enforcement source said. Police were notified.
