The mother of a man suspected of robbing four convenience stores while clad in a Frankenstein mask says her son “is not a monster.” Sherry Jefferies said that her son Eric Orr, who has served multiple stints in jail over the past eight years, just "fell through the cracks," local television station, WSOC-TV reported. Orr was arrested in Charlotte, N.C., Sunday after he allegedly held up a series of store clerks at gunpoint while wearing the mask of the gruesome Mary Shelley character, adding to the string of crimes he's faced jail time for since he was 20 years old. Jefferies said that while she's not excusing his storied criminal history, her son missed out on desperately needed medical treatment when he was young. The mother said that doctors diagnosed the 28-year-old with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia soon after he finished elementary school. But she could not have him committed to a mental institution at the time because he was not suicidal. "He needs some mental health treatment, and somebody to actually take some time to follow through with it to make sure he gets the help he needs," she explained. Jefferies added that she was relieved when she learned of Orr's arrest, because she hadn't heard from her son in over six weeks. "We knew that when you're out on the street there are basically two options — jail or the grave — and as much as I hate seeing him in and out of jail it's much easier to visit him in there than to visit a grave site,” she said. Orr is currently being held on charges of armed robbery and attempted armed robbery, according to the Charlotte Observer. Prosecutors say they will attempt to convict Orr as a habitual felon so that he serves a longer jail sentence, WSOC reported.
