Retired Chicago Police Sergeant Joseph Moseley - brother of former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun - runs for Ald. Sandi Jackson Aldermanic Seat

Among the dozens of Southeast Side residents in the running to replace Sandi Jackson on the City Council is the brother of former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun, the woman who ran against Mayor Rahm Emanuel in 2011.

Emanuel's office released late Monday the names of 53 applicants for alderman of the 7th Ward. Some are familiar from recent unsuccessful attempts to get elected to the seat.

Others, like Joseph Moseley, are running for office for the first time. But Moseley, a retired Chicago police sergeant who has lived in the ward for about 30 years, noted that he has been around politics "most of my life" thanks in part to his older sister.

Moseley said some think it unlikely that Emanuel would pick the sibling of the woman who challenged him for mayor. "I've had some calls from people saying 'You haven't got a chance,' " he said.

But with his background as a homicide detective, Moseley, 56, said he hopes the mayor will appreciate his perspective on the violence plaguing parts of the city. "It's the issue right now, that and the foreclosure problem," Moseley said.

Lionell Martin and Gregory Mitchell, who lost the aldermanic race to Jackson in 2011, are also seeking the appointment.

Oakland woman YOLANDA SMITH accused of posing as doctor to burglarize Bay Area hospitals

SANTA CRUZ -- An Oakland woman suspected of posing as a doctor and stealing credit cards from staff at hospitals throughout Northern California was nabbed by Fairfield police.

Yolanda Smith, 49, was arrested Monday by Fairfield police officers after she was spotted by a hospital security guard.

Smith is suspected of burglarizing hospitals throughout the region by dressing in a white lab coat and pretending to be a doctor to gain entry into secured areas.

Investigators believe she has perpetrated the scam in Daly City, Tracy, Modesto, Gilroy, Walnut Creek, Fairfield and Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz County sheriff's deputies say Smith walked into the neonatal care unit of Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz on Jan. 2 and within about four minutes, stole credit cards from the purses of four nurses.

The nurses noticed the missing cards about two hours later, but by that time, the cards had been used to make more than $4,000 in purchases in Capitola and Live Oak.

The cards were used at stores including Target in Capitola and Best Buy on 41st Avenue in Santa Cruz, Deputy April Skalland said.

Smith was seen leaving the stores in a brown, late 1990s Nissan Maxima sedan driven by a woman, believed to be about 20 years old, with short black hair. Deputies did not have further information on the younger woman Monday.

Santa Cruz County sheriff's investigators have interviewed Smith, who is being held in Fairfield, Skalland said. She did not know when
or if Smith will be extradited to Santa Cruz County as there are a number of jurisdictions investigating her.

Smith faces charges of identity theft, burglary and fraudulent use of a credit card for the Dominican Hospital incident, Skalland said.

The man responsible for pulling off eight robberies in East Harlem over the last 10 days has been identified as an ex-con with a lengthy rap sheet, police said. Jason Commisso, 34, was picked out in a photo array by victims and was also captured on surveillance video after one of the robberies.

Commisso struck most recently on Saturday morning when he attacked a 57-year-old man inside of an elevator on East 97th Street, police said. He fled with the man’s cell phone, wallet and cash, police said.


That victim treated at Metropolitan Hospital for a broken nose, cops said.
In all eight robberies Commisso has targeted Asian men and women inside of elevators, police said.

“We have the hate crimes unit involved,” Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said during a press conference on Friday. “Obviously because the fact that all of the victims are Asian, raises concerns in that area. But we’re not certainly in a position to categorize it as a hate crime at this time.”

Commisso has been arrested more than 30 times, cops said. His arrests include charges for robbery, arson, assault and drugs, cops said. He is 6-foot-1, weighs 200 pounds and has his hair braided in corn rows, cops said. His last known address was in Queens.

Police barred from Vermont gun range over proposed semi-automatic rifle ban

The battle over the right to bear arms is flaring in Vermont, where a local gun range has moved to prohibit the Burlington Police Department from training at its facilities after the City Council voted to advance a measure banning semi-automatic rifles and large-capacity magazines.

The leadership of the Lamoille Valley Fish and Game Club explained that it's "difficult" for the club to support the city -- even its officers -- given the actions of the council.

"We have members in Burlington as well as members of our club that are going to be passing through Burlington and this would directly affect them and we felt that a prejudicial vote like that was going to be non-supportive of our club and being non-supportive of our club makes it very difficult to support Burlington City," said Bob Boivin, chairman of the Lamoille Valley Fish and Game Club.

"It is a constitutional issue. I mean, it's not just a Second Amendment constitutional issue; but it's also a constitutional issue for Vermont. We have laws that have the state governing our gun controls in this area and they're looking to supersede those," he said.

Poor Sebastian Pineda - A judge's decision dashes an (ILLEGAL BEANER'S) immigrant's hope for deportation reprieve

A Chicago judge denied an immigration prosecutor’s request last week for an “administrative closure” of a deportation proceeding against Sebastian Pineda, a Mexican immigrant whose case was chronicled by The Chicago Reporter in August.
The decision threw a wrench into the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s stuttering effort to carry out a 2011 directive by John Morton, the agency’s director, that urged the use of “prosecutorial discretion” to focus on deporting dangerous felons and less on minor offenders who pose no threat.
Under Morton’s policy, immigrants who have strong family ties to this country and no serious criminal background could get a reprieve from deportation. On Tuesday, Pineda, a 31-year-old father of two U.S.-born children, was hopeful; prior to that morning’s hearing, the prosecutor had agreed to seek an “administrative closure” that would have suspended his deportation case.
But immigration judge Craig M. Zerbe had other ideas. “It’s an arbitrary decision, and I will not agree with it,” he said, denying the prosecutor’s motion.
After the hearing, Pineda and his family met with U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez’s staff in his Chicago office. “Our immigration system is not supposed to work like this, and neither is prosecutorial discretion,” Gutierrez said in a written statement about Pineda’s case. “I will be looking into this case to see if there is anything the lawyer or the [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] lawyer can do to prevent the deportation of a breadwinner supporting his family and U.S. citizen children.”

Teen girl killed, boy wounded in shooting near King College Prep high school

A 15-year-old girl was fatally shot and 16-year-old boy wounded about three blocks from King College Prep on the South Side this afternoon, authorities said.

The shooting occurred around 2:20 p.m. in the 4500 block of South Oakenwald Avenue, police said. A 16 year-old boy was shot in the leg and a 15-year-old girl was wounded in the back, police said, citing preliminary information.

The Cook County medical examiner's office has been notified that the girl died.

One of the teens was taken in serious to critical condition to Comer Children's Hospital, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Will Knight.

The other victim also was taken to Comer and police at first believed both victims' conditions had stabilized by a little after 3 p.m., said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala.

Marquis Baldwin, 22, of Pensacola, Fla., allegedly robbed four businesses between Nov. 20 and Jan. 9 in an attempt to get enough money to pay off his girlfriend's probation fees, according to the Press-Register.
Three of those robberies involved Waffle House restaurants, according to WKRG. Baldwin also allegedly robbed a Kangaroo gas station.
Police say surveillance footage ultimately led them to Baldwin, and that after his arrest, he told them he committed the crimes so he could pay for costs related to his girlfriend's probation. According to PNJ.com, all of the woman's probation fees were paid off by the time of the final robbery.
He has been charged with four counts of armed robbery and six counts of aggravated assault, and is being held on $80,0000 in the Escambia County Jail.

Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. caught a lot of heat when he told citizens that they needed to arm themselves because law enforcement can't always be there to protect them.

It's the truth.

Clarke made his case during a radio spot last week. He urged residents to learn how to use a firearm so they can defend themselves in case of an emergency.

I know this is scary stuff. It's scary to think that law enforcement may not be there to respond to your emergencies. And when officers do respond, they may not get there in time to save you.

From experience, I know law enforcement is not automatic. Milwaukee is a big city, and on a Friday or Saturday night, there are a lot of things going on. When police are responding to a number of calls, your call may get kicked to the bottom of the list.

Most people already know this; that's why they usually report that "someone has a gun" or "shots were fired" when they know a weapon is not involved in the incident they are reporting. They do this because they need police to respond right away.

In the 1990s, the politically minded rap group Public Enemy had a song titled "911 is a joke." The song talked about the lack of response to emergency calls in black neighborhoods, specifically the poor response by paramedic crews and not the police.

I'm a gun owner. I keep a gun for protection, and I have taken gun safety courses. I keep my gun locked up, but I also keep it loaded and ready for use.

In an interview with Soledad O'Brien on her "Starting Point" show Monday, Clarke said we all should be scared of the criminal element. "Once the intruder is inside your home, once you're on the street and someone sticks a gun in your face to take your car or your wallet, you don't have the option of calling 911," Clarke said.

We don't have enough officers to protect all of us. It's impossible. Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn has acknowledged that fact. So knowing this, it's only smart for us to be able to protect ourselves.

Not everyone should own a gun. My mother, for example, hates guns, but she keeps a Louisville slugger by her bed. She calls the bat her "Just in case."

I prefer something with more power to keep me and my family protected, and I don't see anything wrong with that.

At least eight people were shot across Chicago overnight, including two men wounded at a West Side gas station where a clerk was slain last summer, police said.

CHICAGO, IL - At least eight people were shot across Chicago overnight, including two men wounded just outside a West Side gas station where a clerk was slain last summer, authorities said.

The men, 31 and 34, were sitting in a car in front of the gas station in the 3300 block of West Washington Boulevard in East Garfield Park around 10:30 p.m., according to police.

Someone parked a van in the street, got out, walked up and shot them, police said. They were taken to Stroger Hospital and were expected to survive, police said. 

In July, a clerk was shot and killed at the station about two hours before his shift was to end, according to police and the man's family.

Reginald Duckworth from Maywood Charged With a Chicago Murder

Police say a Maywood man stabbed a 32-year-old man to death Saturday night in the South Shore neighborhood.

Reginald Duckworth is charged with first degree murder. Duckworth, of the 1700 block of West Madison in Maywood, is accused of stabbing Willie Wilson to death inside his home on the 2500 block of East 73rd Street.

Duckworth was at a party when he’s alleged to have stabbed Wilson about 10:50 p.m., police said. He was pronounced dead on the scene about an hour later, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Wilson was the 7th person killed in Chicago on Saturday.

Duckworth is due in court Tuesday. Check back for more information.

P.O. Ali Haleem becomes the 11th Chicago police officer charged in a tow truck scandal in which officers steered business to drivers for kickbacks

A former Chicago police officer whose undercover work led to charges in separate public corruption probes was himself charged Monday with extorting a tow truck operator and selling firearms to a convicted felon.

According to court records and sources, Haleem worked undercover after federal authorities confronted him about the extortion in 2008, secretly recording conversations. Ricky Hendon, and six others on charges they paid kickbacks in the hopes of securing thousands of dollars in federal grants. Hendon was not charged.

Haleem’s undercover work also resulted in charges against two tax analysts for the Cook County Board of Review who allegedly pocketed a $1,500 cash payoff after agreeing to reduce property tax assessments.

Illegal Mexican Delia Aguila was hoping to get one of those new driver licenses for illegals right before she mushed two people changing their flat tire while DUI

Police say a Humboldt Park woman was intoxicated when her car struck and killed two people changing a tire in the Parkview neighborhood Saturday night.

Delia Aguila was charged with two counts of driving under the influence, reckless driving and a handful of other felonies and misdemeanors, police said. The crash happened in the 3800 block of West 87th Street aboug 10:45 p.m. Saturday, authorities said.

According to police, the vehicle Delia swerved and struck two people, who were outside a vehicle on the Southwest Side. Aguila, of the 900 block of North Lawndale Avenue, is due in bond court Tuesday.

The medical examiner identified the two people hit as William Brunson, 39, of the 8200 block of South Harper Avenue in Chicago, and Victoria R. Means, 34, of the 14100 block of South School Street in south suburban Riverdale.

MONTERREY, MEXICO - Police found a dozen bodies
inside a well in northern Mexico, some of them members of a band
abducted last week by an armed group, a spokesman for the state
of Nuevo Leon, Jorge Domene, said on Monday.

Authorities have identified four of the bodies, including
that of a Colombian national. All were wearing jeans and
T-shirts with the logo of the music group - "Poderoso Kombo
Kolombia."

One band member who managed to escape told police that after
he and the others were kidnapped, their armed men captors asked
them if they belonged to an organized crime gang. They were shot
when they refused to answer.

It was not clear how the surviving band member escaped or
whether he was wounded. Domene said he had fled Mexico after
reporting the attack.

A total of 18 men, 12 musicians plus staff, were abducted on
Thursday at a party in a bar near the industrial city of
Monterrey, Domene said.

Marianna Taschinger Sues Revenge Porn Site Texxxan; Over 20 Women Sue Over Nude Photos - It's a website that allows ex-lovers to post nude photos of those they have dated

Marianna Taschinger is one of dozens of Texas women suing Texxxan.com after an ex posted nude photos of her on the website.
According to ABC News, Taschinger had been dating a man for several months when he posted her private pictures on the site.

"He eventually got me to trust him and I did," Taschinger said. "I guess I didn't know that people were that horrible."
Taschinger told the Beaumont Enterprise that her boyfriend had convinced her to send him the photos, claiming that he would never share them with anyone else.
"I had a specific conversation with him because I didn't feel comfortable sending them to him," she told the paper.
Marianna Taschinger is now taking action, along with dozens of other women who claim they have been emotionally harmed by the website. The group is suing both Texxxan and GoDaddy.com, which hosted the website, for damages, and may also file a class action lawsuit as well.
Texxxan changed to a paid subscription service shortly after the lawsuit was filed, and the site is now down altogether.
"These sites are all about public humiliation," said their attorney, John Morgan.
Other women have also come forward against Texxxan and other similar sites. Hollie Toups, like Taschinger, shared her story with both ABC and End Revenge Porn. Toups, a teacher's aide, found out about the nude photos from a friend. She believes they were posted by an ex-boyfriend, as she once sent explicit pictures to him while they were still dating.
Toups' photos on Texxxan also included some self-portraits that she had never sent to anyone. Her name and email address was also posted on the site.
Another woman in the lawsuit, Kelly Hinson, told the Enterprise that a stranger approached her at Walmart to reveal that he had saved nude photos of her on his computer. She is not sure who posted the pictures, which were taken by an ex-boyfriend. However, he committed suicide two months before they appeared on Texxxan.
Texxan is not the only example of a revenge porn website on the Internet. According to Wired, the trend began with IsAnybodyUp, which also allowed users to post nude photos of others and include their real names and hometowns, all without permission. The site was taken down in the middle of 2012, but Wired estimates that he earned around $10,000 each month on ad revenue alone.
This site was then replaced by imitator IsAnybodyDown, which also included the phone numbers of those pictured. Ars Technica reported that those featured on the site have to pay $250 for their photos to be taken down.
However, Slate does not believe any of these women have a real case. The 1996 Communications Decency Act states that websites are not held liable for content posted by users, even if it invades a person's privacy. The article instead states that Taschinger and the other ladies are better off forcing Texxxan to reveal the identities of those who posted the nude photos and then going after those people instead.

A sheriff who urged Milwaukee-area residents in a radio ad to learn to handle firearms so they can defend themselves is dismissing pointed criticism from the city's mayor -- calling the mayor's response "weak" and telling Fox News "my job is to protect the public."
Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr. stirred controversy after releasing a 30-second radio ad saying budget cuts have hurt officers' ability to respond.
"With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option," he said in the ad. "You can beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back. ... Consider taking a certified safety course in handling a firearm so you can defend yourself until we get there."

The county has received 60 complaints about such facilities in the past month, according to a report by the Planning Department submitted to the Board of Supervisors, the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/WjcRMg) reported Sunday.

That compared to just 15 complaints in the previous five years. The surge might be due to publicity over the closure of a house in Chino Hills that authorities contended had been used to house as many as 30 Chinese women.

It isn't illegal for foreign citizens to give birth in the U.S., but authorities say the maternity tourism hotels frequently are remodeled single-family homes in areas that aren't zoned for hotels or boarding houses.
County Supervisor Don Knabe wants to develop a county law that would specifically outlaw such facilities.
"They're a moneymaking machine. They're totally unsafe," Knabe said. "It's so obvious that they jeopardize not only the health of the baby, but the mother as well."

The Planning Commission report said efforts were being made to crack down on the hotels for zoning, building and health code violations.

Pregnant women, many from Asia, can pay thousands of dollars to stay in the facilities, authorities said.
Officials who went to the Chino Hills home in November said the single-family home had been divided into 17 bedrooms and 17 bathrooms. Neighbors complained of a sewage spill from an overloaded septic tank.

The house was shut down after the city sued the owners.
Elsewhere, joint inspections have been staged by the planning, public works and child welfare departments, and cases have been referred to the state tax board, the report said.

Inspections can be difficult because people answering the door sometimes claim they are unable to speak English and won't allow inspectors to enter. The Planning Department will try to include Chinese-language translators on its inspection teams, the report said.

In addition, child welfare investigators will look for signs of child abuse and neglect, such as newborns crowded into makeshift nurseries, said Neil Zanville, a spokesman for the county Department of Children and Family Services.

"We'd not only ask about sleeping arrangements, we'd ask, has this baby been seen by a doctor? Has it had its shots?" Zanville said.

After losing a daughter and two sons to gun violence, Shirley Chambers prayed and dreamed her only surviving child would grow to be an old man.

But on Sunday evening, a day after her 34-year-old son, Ronnie, was shot and killed, she was coming to the awful realization that she would need to buy another set of flowers on her regular visits to see her children at Burr Oak Cemetery.

“I’d pray for God to protect Ronnie and keep him safe day and night,” said Shirley Chambers, a cashier at a downtown Portillo’s eatery who recently took her son into her apartment on the Near North Side because he was having financial troubles.

Ronnie Chambers was the manager of aspiring rapper YK, short for Yung Killa. On Dec. 17, they were featured on an episode of “The Ricki Lake Show.”
