Police have charged a man with murder after a Wednesday night fire killed a 35-year-old woman and injured her 6-year-old daughter.
A police report obtained by the Tribune identifies the man as the late woman's husband and the father of the injured girl.
According to the report, Gregorio Carmona, 35, poured gasoline on Claudia Martinez before lighting the fatal fire that claimed her life.
Carmona, of the 4800 block of North Kenneth Avenue, is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated arson.
An autopsy Friday determined Martinez died from thermal injuries that came from the apartment fire and her death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Martinez suffered severe burns in the fire Wednesday night in the basement of the two-flat where she lived in the 4800 block of North Kenneth Avenue, according to the medical examiner's office.
The fire started about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, and Martinez and a 6-year-old girl were taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital following the fire, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala.
Martinez was transferred to Loyola University Medical Center's burn unit, where she was declared dead just before 6 a.m. Thursday, according to the medical examiner's office.
